Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Modeling Job Aid

A classroom-friendly visual I created to support staff in using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) strategies. Based on guidance from our SLP, I transformed key communication categories into a clear, colorful reference tool.

Job Aid for helpful phrases to use with students that use AAC devices

Overview

This visual job aid was created in response to an email from our Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), who shared best practices for supporting students using AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices. I recognized the need for a quick, easy-to-reference visual that could be displayed in classrooms to help staff model effective communication in real time. The goal was to make AAC strategies more accessible and consistent across settings.

Process

  • After reviewing the SLP's original, key communication functions, and categories with examples (Requesting, Commenting, Expressions, Asking Questions, Gaining Attention) I made a chart to display the phrases.

  • I focused on clarity, color-coding, and visual appeal to ensure the aid would stand out in classroom environments.

  • I iterated through layout drafts before finalizing a version that balanced function and simplicity.
